The 12 Days Of Christmas Stamps 2014: Day 5 – Canada & The Bahamas

On 27 October 2014, Canada released three stamps portraying Santa Claus performing some of his duties and are denominated for Canadian, US and international postal rates. “In each of the three figures, the kindness and generosity of Santa emerges”, says stamp designer Hélène L’Heureux. “Whether he’s answering letters, handing out gifts, or simply expressing peace and serenity, Santa is endearing, merry and timeless”.

A fourth Christmas stamp released by Canada features a beautiful detail that shows a classic 17th century painting of the Virgin and Child. The painting is part of the collection at Basilica Cathedral Notre-Dame de Québec in Quebec City. This year’s stamp issue recognizes the parish’s 350th anniversary.

The Bahamas released a set of four Christmas stamps on 11 November. They were designed by Andrew Robinson and depict the traditional Christmas story. Described as illustrations with “characters of the familiar Nativity Story shown as silhouettes against brightly coloured night skies”, the stamps capture the enchantment of the season in blue, violet, red, and gold.

In blue, is “Peace on Earth” – Mary and Joseph travel to Bethlehem.

In violet, “Tidings of Great Joy” – the angel visits the shepherds bringing tidings of great joy, for all people.

In red, “A Time for Giving” – the wise men travel to Bethlehem in search of the infant Jesus with their gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.

And in gold, “A Saviour is Born”.
